Overview
A humid summer in 1993, Jolene, a quiet Filipina teenager, is approaching the end of high school along with her two best friends Kate (sweet, colourful and bright) and Sammie (rebellious, quick tempered but loving). When a final project has Jolene partnered with Amelia, the most popular girl in school, it sparks a fast and emotionally heavy, unlikely friendship, leading Jolene to question her friendships, and her sexuality. The conversations effortlessly flow as both girls open up about their estranged parents, a secret they’ve both been hiding from others in their lives. Throughout her friendship with Amelia, Jolene skips basketball practice, ignores her friends at school, and lies to her family about where she’s going. And when the end-of-the-year party influences drunk Jolene to kiss her new friend Amelia, Jolene’s world quickly falls apart. Through self discovery and opening up fully to her family and friends, Jolene emerges at the end of the film as a courageous, loving, and aspirational young woman looking towards the future.
